Waldburg Castle – Gate to the Middle Ages

After a steep incline you walk painfully slow through the castle’s gate and now you find yourself in the outer ring of Waldburg Castle. At the wooden gate you are welcomed by the herald: “ Come in, you honourable guests. Come in and be amazed!”

You step into the overwhelming castle courtyard. Maids will offer water and beer. There is a smell of fresh baken bread and roasted poultry coming from the castle’s kitchen. The guests will be dressed with tabards.

Then everybody goes silent. The herald taps with his baton and announces the electoral trumpeters. Then the drummers and trumpeters line up in their historical uniforms of lansquenets. Earsplitting drumming starts. As soon as the trumpeters start playing some eyes will be moist. Due to the acoustics in the courtyard even the tough guys will get goose bumps. The visitors will clap their hands and shout with joy when the trumpeters finish their play.

Now the damsels of the castle come to introduce their realm to you. You will be guided through the castle for about 30 minutes and afterwards you may enjoy the view from the castle’s balcony – up there on the castle’s roof.

Eventually the cupbearer is waiting for you! “Take a seat in our great hall. Enjoy the meals and beverages”. The maids have ready a bowl of rose-flavored water with which you may wash your hands. The herald will introduce to you the eating habits as soon as everybody is seated. Then the maids will come and serve the dinner. “Eat and drink, laugh and sing!”
